New Year, New Learning Opportunities

Thursday, January 3rd, 2013

Happy New Year HealthLINE!

My 2013 resolution is to improve my librarian skills/knowledge and to keep up with emerging trends and technologies.  Frankly, I have a greater shot at success with this resolution than anything related to exercise, weight loss or organization!  Another great resolution- be realistic! :-)

Here are a selection of webinars for this month and beyond:

  • Dr. Jane Borzath, an eLearning coordinator for the state of North Carolina, teaches two webinars a month related to online learning.  A list of classes through June can be found on her website.
  • OCLC Webjunction has a very nice list of free webinars being held in January from variety of sources.
  • The Infopeople website has a list of four webinars being held in January in February.  One I’m very interested in taking is called, ‘Keeping Your Library Safe- Black Belt Librarians’.
  • The Texas State Library and Archives Commission has a list of classes as well.  Most are aimed at a school or public library, but I have signed up for their four-part leadership webinar.

I’ll be happy to add to this list- just let me know what classes you’re looking forward to taking in 2013.

How to help your local disaster response team!

Thursday, March 22nd, 2012

Become a valuable part of your local disaster response team as an information specialist! The National Library of Medicine Disaster Information Management Research Center (DIMRC http://disasterinfo.nlm.nih.gov) offers a number of super tools that can even be downloaded ahead of time in case the web is no longer working but you have access to a computer.

Plan ahead! A great way to start is by watching this free one hour overview, “Spring is in the Air: Get Ready with Help From the NLM Disaster Information Management Research Center” which is now available in the SCR CONNECTions archives http://nnlm.gov/scr/training/webmeeting.html#Archives.

If you do it by April 4 you can earn 1 hour of CE from the Medical Library Association, but the webinar will remain available after that. Included in the presentation is information on how to earn their new Disaster Information Management Certificate.

The speaker is Siobhan Champ-Blackwell, MSLIS Librarian, Aquilent, Inc., contractor with the National Library of Medicine Specialized Information Services Division, Disaster Information Management Research Center was the guest presenter.

This was originally offered March 21, 2012, as an NN/LM SCR CONNECTions webinar, Thanks to Cheryl Rowan there for coordinating it.

There’s a fair amount of doom and gloom out in library land, but futurist Joan Frye Williams and strategist George Needham are having none of it! These passionate library advocates believe that dealing with desperate economic times need not make us desperate.

In this upbeat webinar, George and Joan will explore how we can get out of the rat race that says “do more with less” and shift our focus to hope-engendering ways to “do different with less.” They’ll offer practical techniques for improving your own job satisfaction and moving your organization in a more positive direction.
