This will be my last post of the day- I'm finally catching up with my blogs after moving and unpacking!

The SCC blog posted information about an online Power Searching with Google class. The class started on the 10th, but registration is open until the 16th.

The instructor for this class, David Russell, gave a presentation to investigative journalists on advanced Google search techniques. One of those journalists posted the highlights. Very good tips!

For those of us unable to attend MLA this year, we apparently missed a pretty phenomenal Janet Doe Lecture given by Mark Funk. Happily, a Vimeo version has been made available.

The Southeastern/Atlantic division of NN/LM is offering a free webinar titled, 'MEDLINE/PubMed: A Grab Bag of Tips and Tricks for Experienced Searchers'. It will be held on July 18 from 11:00 am - 12:00 pm CDT.

One of my favorite bloggers, Michelle Kraft, has posted an excellent overview of the issues involved with libraries who wish to loan iPads. She posted policies, existing programs and even a pretty comprehensive list of apps to load.

The Colorado Library Association is hosting a webinar titled, Making it Stick: Embracing Transliteracy in Library Programming and Education.

The webinar describes transliteracy as: The ability to communicate and interact across multiple platforms and technologies. Sounds pretty relevant to what most of us do!

The class will be held Wednesday May 2nd from 1:30-2:30- no registration required.

Become a valuable part of your local disaster response team as an information specialist! The National Library of Medicine Disaster Information Management Research Center (DIMRC http://disasterinfo.nlm.nih.gov) offers a number of super tools that can even be downloaded ahead of time in case the web is no longer working but you have access to a computer.

Plan ahead! A great way to start is by watching this free one hour overview, “Spring is in the Air: Get Ready with Help From the NLM Disaster Information Management Research Center” which is now available in the SCR CONNECTions archives http://nnlm.gov/scr/training/webmeeting.html#Archives.

If you do it by April 4 you can earn 1 hour of CE from the Medical Library Association, but the webinar will remain available after that. Included in the presentation is information on how to earn their new Disaster Information Management Certificate.

I read about PubMed Health somewhere, but I haven't had a chance to dig deeper into its use. So, I was very happy to see that MidContinental Chapter of the NNLM is offering a free webinar on this product on April 25. You will receive 1 MLA CE credit for attending.

I always struggle with explaining this concept when teaching patrons to search PubMed. If you don't mention it up front, someone always asks!

The NNLM's blog Reference Point, has a very nice synopsis that has helped clarify the issue for me. I will be incorporating some of their points into future training materials.

Elsevier posted a news release on their website yesterday announcing their withdrawal of support for the Research Works Act. The bill has been withdrawn in the U.S. house by the sponsors. I suppose it would be unprofessional to skip around singing, 'ding dong the bill is dead', so I will refrain from doing so.

Inside Higher Ed has an interesting article on this development titled, 'A Significant Flinch'.

The Research Works Act was discussed in an earlier post, as was a scientist organized boycott against Elsevier.
